Building is defined as any human-made structure used or intended for supporting or sheltering any use or continuous occupancy. This article attempts to list the top 10 oldest buildings. The extant freestanding buildings constructed in the world which are the masterpiece of the skill and handwork of the people of that era. Today we become astonished to see these wonders that in such remote ages without any modern technology and machine how such great construction were made.

Treasury of Atreus

Number one place in the top 10 oldest buildings is the Treasury of Atreus. This is a tomb, which was constructed during the Bronze Age, around 3,250 years ago. It was the tallest and widest dome in the world unless Pantheon was made.

Minoan palaces of Knossos

Number two place in the top 10 oldest buildings is Minoan palaces of Knossos, Greece. It was the ceremonial and political center of the Minoan civilization and culture. This palace was partially restored under the direction of Arthur Evans around 2000 BC. The palace was abandoned at some unknown time at the end of the Late Bronze Age, ca. 1380-1100 BC.

Great Pyramid of Giza

Number three place in the top 10 oldest buildings is Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt. It is also known as the Pyramid in the Giza Necropolis bordering what is now El Giza, Egypt. This one is the oldest one of the seven wonders of the Ancient World. It was built as a tomb for fourth dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu. It was built over a 10 to 20- years period concluding around 2560 BCE. It was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years.

Pyramid of Djoser

Number four place in the top 10 oldest buildings is Pyramid of Djoser, Egypt. This is located in Saqqara Necropolis, Egypt. It was built during the 27th century BC.  This pyramid originally stood 62 meters tall, with a base of 109 m × 125 m. It was clad in polished white limestone. The oldest known stone pyramid structure dates to 3000 BC or up to 4,700 years ago.

Tarxien Temples, Malta

Number five place in the top 10 oldest buildings is Tarxien Temples, Malta. It was dated to 3150 BC. The site was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. The first temple has been dated to approximately 3150 BC and is the most elaborately decorated of the temples of Malta.

Newgrange, Ireland

Number six place in the top 10 oldest buildings is Newgrange, Ireland. It was built during the Neolithic period, around 3200 BC or up to 5,100 years ago. This monument is older than Egyptian pyramids and Stonehenge. It is believed that the site had religious significance, but there is no agreement about what the site actually was used for. It was also noted as one of the most important megalithic structures in Europe.

La Hougue Bie, Jersey

Number seven place in the top 10 oldest buildings is La Hougue Bie, in the Parish of Grouville, Jersey. It was used around 3500 BC. The site is one of the largest and best preserved passage graves and the most impressive and best preserved monument. During world war two it was used as a key lookout point.

Knap of Howar, Scotland

Number eight place in the top 10 oldest buildings is Knap of Howar, Scotland. This is the oldest stone house in Europe. This was standing from 3700 BC to 3100 BC, or up to 5,500 years ago. Now this site is in the care of Scotland. It is the third oldest building in the world.

Megalithic Temples of Malta

Number nine place in the top 10 oldest buildings is Megalithic Temples of Malta. This site is claimed as the oldest free-standing structures in the world. This site was constructed during three distinct time periods approximately between 3600 BC and 700 BC, also over 5,500 years ago. These temples were used as religious temples.

Tumulus of Bougon

Number ten place in the top 10 oldest buildings is the Tumulus of Bougon or Necropolis of Bougon is a group of five Neolithic barrows located in Bougon, France. The oldest structures of this prehistoric monument dated back to 4800 BC.
